The boys, Shari and I hiked "Y" mountain. It's quite a steep little hike with switchbacks all the way up. Once we reached the top we gave Grandma a call letting her know that the boys had red on while sitting on the Y. Oh the fun family rivalry. After hiking down we went for icecream at BYU Creamery.

A fun fact about the "Y" At 380 ft high and 130 ft wide, the "Y" is even larger than the letters on California's "Hollywood sign". Info from UTAH VALLEY MAGAZINE 50 nifty to-dos before the sun sets on summer. The bucket list.

CAPITOL REEF

A few weeks ago Shari and I went hiking in Capitol Reef. I took a Friday off work and we stayed the weekend. We hiked Grand Wash to Cassidy Arch the first day. We had limited time because we made reservations to eat at Hell's Backbone Grill in Boulder Ut. It is really really good food, a must when you're in the area or plan a trip to just go eat. Its so worth it. Saturday we hike for about 5 hours. We hiked Cohab Canyon then on to Rim Overlook and back. The park is so beautiful can't wait to go again.

While on my trip in New York we went to Magnolia Bakery for cupcakes. I searched for a recipe and found it from the Magnolia and more cookbook. I think I will have to buy this book. They turned out really yummy!!!!! NO MORE CAKE MIX cupcakes for me.

I was able to go to the Big City to ring in the New Year!!! I watched the ball drop at Time Square. I saw Wicked on Broadway. I stood in line for hours at the Empire State Building. The view was worth it. I ate at fabulous french restaurants. I saw the Christmas windows at Bloomingdale's and Saks. I visit Rockefeller Center to view the Christmas tree. I went shopping in Soho. Had cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery. I rode on the subway and a NYC taxi. The best part of the trip was spending time with Shari. I LOVE NEW YORK.

I went with my parents to Bluff for a dedication of a statue of President John Taylor at the fort. Thanks to Aunt LaRue and Uncle Karl I was able to go see San Juan Hill and River House Ruin. The Hole in the Rock Foundation took Elder Perry, the Governor, and other dignitaries out to see San Juan Hill also and to get a little San Juan dust in their shoes. I think they were all impressed. If you are traveling in the Four Corners area make sure you stop in to visit Bluff Fort.

Witches Party

Emily held a witches party over the weekend. We all came dressed in our spookiest finery. She planned a fun dinner of soup in a pumpkin bread bowl, bone shaped breadsticks, Halloween shaped pasta salad, and spider nest of jello and pumpkin roll for dessert. What a fun time.... Grotto hike and Ice blocking

So we finally had a successful hiking trip to the Grotto in Payson Canyon. We tried to go earlier in the year but the road was still closed for the winter. You can read about that a few posts back. The Grotto trail head is about 5-6 miles up Payson canyon. The trail itself only takes about 10 minutes to hike and is a fun easy trail. Hadley and I have hiked it before but I think the others had fun seeing it. Hadley and McKena hiked to the top were the stream flows into the Grotto. Preston and I made it about halfway, it was a bit slippery for us. Ren was brave or maybe a little nuts she stood under the waterfall very cold water. After coming back from hiking I thought we should go Ice Blocking while we were in Payson and could use the Peteetneet hill. I think that the kids really liked this. We had a really good time. I hit my head pretty hard on my second ride down so that was it for me. They kids went down head first most of the time and made trains. Next time we will remember that you should wear long pants while doing this activity.

STEWART FALLS/SUNDANCE

My family had a "staycation" at the Helquist cabin near Sundance Resort. We went up on Sunday for Dad and Mom's 43rd anniversary. Mom, Dad and I were there earlier than everyone else so we decided to hike Stewart Falls together, it was Dads first time to the falls. The rest of the family came later that day and had dinner and hung out at the cabin. It ended up just being the girls that stayed the rest of the time. We made many hikes to the waterfall and even got to ride the ski lift at Sundance and then hike from there. It was fun to come into the falls from a new trail. We found ripe wild raspberries along the way, a little bitter but kind of fun to try. Sadie said that she has hiked to Stewart falls around 6 times, I need to take her somewhere new. Emily purchased tickets to the outdoor play The Fantasticks that Sundance was putting on. We really enjoyed the outdoor atmosphere. We stayed until Wednesday and had a great time.

QUILT SHOW

THE SPRINGVILLE MUSEUM OF ART IS HOLDING IT'S ANNUAL QUILTS SHOW. DAD,MOM AND I WENT LAST SATURDAY. THERE ARE SOME AMAZING QUILTS TO VIEW. ITS SO FUN TO SEE ALL THE DIFFERENT STYLES OF QUILTS FROM VERY TRADITIONAL TO SOME THAT ARE A LITTLE CRAZY FOR MY TASTE. IF YOU ARE IN THE SPRINGVILLE AREA YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY CHECK IT OUT.

ARCH CANYON HIKE

My latest hike was to Arch Canyon near Blanding Utah. Shari was in Utah for her vacation and invited me to go backpacking. We backpacked in four hour on Monday and made camp along the wash. We didn't take a tent and slept out under the stars. The stars were so amazing that night just to have the chance to see them was worth the whole trip. The next morning we got up early and continued up the canyon for about a hour and forty five minutes to see some beautiful arches. We hiked out that day. I think we hiked around seven hours that day. We took the scenic drive home over Lake Powell and down through Capital Reef. I love Utah what a beautiful state we live in.

WE WENT TO THE MIDNIGHT SHOWING OF THE NEW HARRY POTTER MOVIE. I HAVE TO SAY THAT WE ALL LOVED IT. I PURCHASED THE TICKETS ON LINE ABOUT A WEEK AGO. AFTER WORK ON TUESDAY NIGHT I WENT TO GET THE TICKETS AROUND 6:30 AND THERE WAS ALREADY A LINE OUTSIDE OF THE THEATER. I CALLED SYDNEY AND TOLD HER TO COME WITH CAMP CHAIRS,I-PODS AND BOOKS. SADIE, SYDNEY AND I GOT IN LINE AROUND 7:00PM. THE TIME ACTUALLY WENT BY RATHER FAST. WE PLAYED A COUPLE OF CARD GAMES AND WATCHED MOVIES ON OUR I-PODS AND I EVEN GOT TO DO A LITTLE STITCHING. WE HAD PIZZA FOR DINNER WHILE SETTING IN LINE. LUCKY FOR RENI SHE WENT TO A Y.W. ACTIVITY SO SHE JOINED US AROUND 10:00 OR SO. STANDING I LINE WAS WELL WORTH IT. WE DID END UP GETTING GOOD SEATS. WHAT A FUN NIGHT....

Emily and her family invited me to go on a mini vacation with them. We headed for southern Utah. We left Monday morning for Moad. We camped at the K.O.A. campground. The fist day was really hot and little Eden wasn't to happy. We decided to drive out to see Dead Horse point and give Eden a chance to have a nap on the drive. We also drove to the Island in the sky district of Canyonlands. We hiked a small hike to see Mesa Arch and visited most of the outlooks. Canyonlands is very beautiful and rugged. The next day we went to Arches National Park. We hiked the Devils Garden Trail where we enjoyed viewing Landscape Arch and others along the way. Eden was so good on the hike. That afternoon was to hot for us to hike so we spent it down town in Moad. We ate lunch on the banks of the Colorado River and took a little scenic drive until it was cool enough to go back and hike to Delicate Arch. I love when you walk around the bend and there she is in all her glory. If you haven't ever hiked to see Delicate Arch she is a must! We enjoyed a beautiful sunset in the Park that night. The next day we packed up camp and thought we needed to see a bit more of the park before heading home. We decided to go view the Window Arches and Double Arch. It was a little hot after that so we decided it was time to head for home. Thank you to Emily and her family for inviting me on their vacation.

LAZY SUNDAY AFTERNOONS

MEMORIAL WEEKEND

I HAD A FABULOUS WEEKEND.

EMILY, CLINT AND EDEN CAME HOME LATE FRIDAY NIGHT. SATURDAY WE TOOK A LITTLE HIKE NEAR THE ELK PASTURE IN THE DRIZZLY WEATHER. WE FOLLOWED THE LITTLE RUN OFF STREAM FOR AWHILE. WE DECIDED THAT IT WAS TO WET AND COLD FOR LITTLE EDEN. THE LITTLE NATURE WALK WAS FUN EVEN IN THE RAIN AND MUD. BY THE TIME WE CAME HOME LIBBY AND HER KIDS HAD MADE IT. THAT NIGHT WE COOKED TIN-FOIL DINNER IN THE FIRE PIT IN THE BACK YARD. WE DIDN'T DO MUCH ON SUNDAY. WE TOOK FLOWERS TO GRANDPA AND GRANDMA WINN'S HEADSTONE AND OTHER FAMILY. MOLLY AND SOME OF HER KIDS CAME THAT AFTERNOON.
MONDAY I WANTED TO COOK IN MY DUTCH OVEN THAT DERK AND CHRISTINE GAVE ME FOR CHRISTMAS. I MADE EVERYONE BREAKFAST. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE COOKED IN A DUTCH OVEN. I THINK IT TURNED OUT PRETTY GOOD. THE RECIPE IS CALLED MOUNTAIN-MAN BREAKFAST. BACON,SAUSAGE, HASH BROWNS, EGGS AND CHEESE ALL MIXED TOGETHER. KENNETH, DERK, CHRIS AND ELI ALL MADE IT HOME FOR BREAKFAST AND STAYED THE DAY. EVENTUALLY EVERYONE WAS AT HOME BECAUSE IT WAS MOMS BIRTHDAY.

ROAD CLOSED

I had this wonderful idea to take the kids and hike up to the Grotto in Payson Canyon. Little did we know that the road was still closed from the winter season.

So we thought that maybe we could walk up the road to the Grotto. I kept saying it's just around the next bend but it never came.So we turned around and headed back to the car. We still had fun and enjoyed the nice sunshine and our treats. The Canyon was beautiful the river was full with the spring run off and the kids had fun racing down the road.

We were parked right by a road sign that said Maple Lake was open and only a mile and a half away. we decided to go to the lake. It's a fun, little mountain lake with a walking path around it. The kids had their water shoes and played in the water near the bridge. All in all we had a good time.

We will have to try going to the Grotto another time. They will probable open the road this weekend for Memorial Day. I guess I was trying to get a jump on the season.

I need to find some other fun hiking trails to take the kids on. Any suggestions?

If you didn't know already I love to sew. I think this love was transferred genetically right from my mother.

This past weekend I upgraded my sewing machine. I now own a Bernina 1080. I was sad to lose my other machine. We had spent many hours together. The new machine was to good of a deal to pass up.

(not my actual machine but you get the idea)
I have been sewing every Thursday night for a least the last six or seven years. Our class was held at the High School Home-Ec room. Do to cut backs in the district our little class has been canceled.(SAD)I really enjoyed the class and having that time set aside to sew each week. It was fun to see what other people were working on. I will miss it.

I am still working on this. Its getting closer to being done. When we (Mom and I) were at the Bernina store they had this same quilt on display. Theirs is a little different than mine. It has 3 sections where as mine will only have 2. I think it will turn out pretty cute. Hopefully I can get it done before the County Fair in August. I am also working on a cross stitch for the Fair but that will have to be another post.

Make a Smilebox scrapbook

I am one of the Activity Days leaders in my ward. I am over the eight and nine year old girls. This past Saturday we had a Tea Party. We had bite size sandwiches, fruit kabobs,cheese, pickle, olive kabobs and mini cupcakes. We talked about temples and played a game of concentration using temple pictures. All the girls came dressed up. Sadie and McKena were able to be my special guests because they happened to be to at Grandma's for the weekend. All in all I think the girls had a fun time.

I had a day off work because of Martin Luther King Jr. day, so Dani and her kids came to visit. Dani wanted to learn how to bake homemade bread, so Mom gave her some instruction. I thought it would be fun if her kids could go for a ride on a horse. Dad was nice enough to saddle Junior and take each of the them on a little ride. I was really fun the have them down for the day.

New Year's Day was a great day for sleigh riding. S and K with the help of Pa had made a slide at the barn the day before. The Kids wanted to try it out a few more times before they had to go home. We didn't have any real sleighs so Pa (dad) found a plastic lid and a tarp that worked. (I call it our W.T. or redneck sleigh riding, but we had fun.)

I HIKED THE NATURAL BRIDGES LOOP. THE TRAIL IS A 8.6 MILE LOOP, THAT TAKES YOU THROUGH A WASH THAT CONNECTS ALL THREE BRIDGES. THE CANYON WAS SO QUIET, IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL DAY FOR A HIKE.

Halloween quilt

This is my new Halloween quilt. Don't you just love it? I saw it in a cute little quilt shop and I new I had to make it. I bought a few pieces of fabric but most of it is from scraps. The name of the quilt is which witch or something like that. Check out www.crazyoldladiesquilts.com for more patterns from this designer.

I paper pieced this candy corn quilt last year for Halloween. I had it quilted this year. I love the variegated thread, it looks so cute. I made the little batty pillow a few years back.

Yesterday was my former roommate Tammy's B-Day. She just happened to be in Utah last night, so we got together for a little reunion. It was so fun to see her. Happy B-Day Tambo.

Our Achievment Day group went to the pumpkin patch for our activity.

We had lots of fun on the hayride through the orchards to pick our great pumpkins.

We were happy to have a few guest to join in the fun. My sister and three of my beautiful nieces.

It was one of the A-Day girls bithday so bought a scoop of icecream to celebrate. It was a fun Saturday morning.
